Der 1602 geborene Athanasius Kircher war im Barock der meistglesene Universalgelehrte der Welt. Aus Geisa (Thüringen) stammend, flüchtete Kircher vor dem 30-jährigen Krieg quer durch Europa und fand schließlich in Rom eine neue Heimat, wo er sich Athanasius Kircherus Fuldensis nannte. Er und seine Werke, darunter eine Abhandlung über den Turmbau zu Babel, sind heute weitgehend vergessen. Immerhin erinnert ein Mondkrater an den Weltbürger mit den tausend Einfällen. Athanasius Kircher, born in 1602, was the most widely read polymath in the world during the Baroque period. Originally from Geisa (Thuringia), Kircher fled across Europe before the Thirty Years‘ War and finally found a new home in Rome, where he called himself Athanasius Kircherus Fuldensis. He and his works, including a treatise on the Tower of Babel, are largely forgotten today. After all, a lunar crater is reminiscent of the cosmopolitan with a thousand ideas.
